faq: WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE CHURCH IN ST.PETERSBURG TO VISIT?
- The Church on the Spilled Blood is beautiful, majestic and colorful cathedral in the style of the Russian Renaissance. It was built on the place where Russian Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. His son Alexander III ordered the construction of a Church for regular services for the repose of his killed father. That is why the name " the Church on the Spilled Blood" stuck to the temple, although its official name is the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.
- The Church attracts attention with its five onion domes, richly decorated and covered with jewelry enamel. It has a façade similar to St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, and its multicolored exterior distinguishes the Church from the typically strict architectural proportions and color combinations of St.Petersburg.
- The highlights of both the interior and exterior of the Cathedral are its mosaics. With a total area of 23,130 square feet, it is one of the largest mosaic collections in Europe.
- The Church is located in the heart of the city, about 8-10 minute walk from the main street - Nevsky Prospect. The standard tour inside takes approximately 35-45 minutes. Of course, the tour can be longer or shorter, depending on your wish.
