faq: SAINT ISAAC'S CATHEDRAL. WHAT SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT THIS PLACE?

  • Saint Isaac's Cathedral is one of the symbols of the city. This architectural masterpiece is truly gorgeous.
  • At the time of construction, St. Isaac's Cathedral became the most expensive temple in Europe. Decoration of the cathedral’s interior required 900 pounds of gold, 16 tons of malachite, 1,100 pounds of lapis lazuli, and 1,000 tons of bronze.
  • The construction of this cathedral took 40 years. According to legend, such a long construction of the Cathedral was not caused by the complexity of the work. The clairvoyant predicted death to the architect (Montferrand) immediately after the completion of the temple. Indeed, the architect died a month after the consecration of the cathedral.
  • St. Isaac's Cathedral Colonnade is one of the highest points of view in the city center. To reach the colonnade you have to climb 262 steps up (no elevator). The stairs have numbers on them telling you how many steps still to go and when you get to 0, you discover there is another metal stair to go which adds another 50 steps to the journey. But you shouldn’t miss it! Truly magnificent views open from this place on the city center and Neva river.
