faq: Saint Petersburg White Nights. What is it?
- White Nights period is an atmospheric phenomenon. During this period the sun never fully sets and the sky stays bright throughout the night with a light similar to the light of sunset. White Nights can be experiences in many other cities in Russia, Sweden, Norway and Finland. But in St.Petersburg they are most spectacular and the city is often called as a city of “White Nights”.
- Officially, this period lasts from June 11 to July 2, but in fact nights are very light here from the end of May until mid July. The pick of the White Nights falls after 20th of June. The peak of the White Nights falls on June 20-22, the eve of the summer solstice.
- The city is famous for their drawbridges and White Nights are considered the most exciting time to see them. There are about 300 bridges in St. Petersburg, and 20 of them are drawbridges. Bridges start to open after the midnight according to schedule (one after another).
- A night boat trip along the Neva is a good opportunity to look at the city from the water, go under the raised bridges, admire the architectural ensembles of the Neva river area.
